To get from Cyril E. King Airport (STT) in St. Thomas to Red Hook, where you can catch a ferry to Cruz Bay, St. John, you have two primary options: renting a car or taking a taxi. Renting a car allows you the flexibility to explore the island at your own pace, with various rental companies available at the airport. The drive to Red Hook takes approximately 30 minutes. If you decide to rent a car and take it on the car ferry to St. John, be aware that the car ferry rate is $65 per car round trip, plus a $6 port fee cash only!

Additionally, The Wharfside Village Hotel does not offer hotel parking, so you will need to find public parking or pay for parking at a nearby lot. Alternatively, you can take a taxi, which is convenient and eliminates the need to navigate unfamiliar roads. Taxis are readily available outside the airport terminal, and the ride to Red Hook is direct and typically takes around 30 minutes as well. Please see St. John parking section below for more details.
Taxi service on St. John is well organized and there is a good availability. Popular locations like the ferry dock, Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay have a taxi dispatcher on site and a taxi waiting area. You can call for a taxi to pick you up at other locations. St. John taxis charge per person and by destination. There are no metered taxis. Due to limited parking on St. John, particularly at some of the smaller beaches and at most trailheads, taking a taxi is a top choice for getting around the island. Please note, taxi rates are one-way only.
Renting a jeep on St. John is a popular choice. Car rental agencies on St. John are locally owned businesses, and the majority are in Cruz Bay. There are several agencies to choose from. Jeeps are the most popular vehicle type because St. John is mountainous, and many of the island’s villas have steep access roads and driveways.
Free Parking Options
Cruz Bay Customs Parking Lot is a free lot by the public bathrooms in Cruz Bay, and behind the US Custom’s Building, across from the US Post Office. It fills quickly.
Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Parking Lot is a small lot with free parking next to the tennis courts, which are just up the road from the car barge dock. They fill up fast.
Paid Parking Lots
L&L Parking Lot is a paid lot near the police station on Prince Street. Its right in Cruz Bay.
Lumberyard Parking Lot is a paid lot, it’s just across and above from the Victor William Sewer Marine Facility, aka “The Creek” on Cruz Bay Road.
Slim Man’s Parking Lot is a paid lot, and its across from Wharfside Village, up the street from the passenger ferry dock. Also, right in Cruz Bay.
St. John is a great place for hiking! It is home to the Virgin Islands National Park, with over 22 hiking trails. The trails crisscross the island and include easy, to challenging hikes. The main roads on St. John however are not pedestrian friendly. Very few roads on the island have sidewalks and drivers aren’t used to sharing the roads with people.
